Malaysia finally launches its overdue plan to increase internet connectivity in the country code name HSBB (High Speed-Broadband) later run under the brand name call “Unifi” had finally announce the pricing and capacity of its subscribers can use today. The project have been started way back in 2008 whereby our telecommunication company (TMnet) & the government cooperate to deliver a premium online experience at affordable prices.

Much to my dismay it was expected from them as the price would be pricey. It is priced at RM149 for the 5Mbps package, RM199 for 10Mbps and RM249 for RM20 Mbps with these prices I doubt it will increase the penetration rate as the rich and big corporate can only afford considering the inflation in our country that make living in Malaysia just enough to pay taxes & the bills with little to no for personal entertainment.

The middle class and the poor might have to stick with streamyx and forget about getting it leaving us bare. Rumor has it that cap will be enforce in the near future according to the rate below.

5mbps for RM149, 60GB/month cap
10mbps for RM199, 90GB/month cap
20mbps for RM249, 120GB/month cap

I doubt it will be enough for anyone who fully utilize the internet like me with a few HD movies, Games, Musics, Software upgrade, youtubing and some BTing would not be sufficient. Complains about the ridiculous pricing, no reduction price of streamyx old packages and the a foreseeing cap have enrage the average Malaysian internet user.

Unifi come bundled with IP video (IPTV) with a separate dedicated 8MB fiber line and IP telephony. The IPTV will features 22 channels and video-on-demand. For those who are operating your own business they have a much higher price but with the same speed and no IPTV nor VOD.

5Mbps for RM199
10Mbps for RM599
20Mbps for Rm 899

I can only stay with streamyx and the best thing about it is the unlimited bandwidth while contrasting with Unifi. Will there be a chance that the price of broadband be reduce to a more cheaper price for higher speed?

Does Unifi Worth it?

Another rip-off from TM Nut. The quality will be poor regardless of the theoretical throughput. There is no point is paying for faster speed when there is so much packet loss, latency, misconfigured routes, useless technical support … Unfortunately, other ISPs in Malaysia can not be much better because they also use the broken TM backbone. Monopoly + Corruption = Malaysia Internet.

That's how they roll practically :D We all know what games they are playing to pray on the weak. Kinda sad to become a Malaysian right now.

  • Fuck

then go to another country la!

  • http://shockerz.wordpress.com/ shockerz

What a simple minded comment you gave there. Please do give some constructive and viable answer rather than “then go to another country la!”. I wish I can, if possible I'm going to Japan or Europe side but going just won't solve the problem =.=

  • Concerned

You must be an idiot – it reflects on the nick you picked. The people in this forum are expecting good service for the money they pay. That's all and if a national (govt) company is providing poor service it reflects on the Malaysia as a whole. And since we dont have alternatives for such service, we are entitled to express our opinion. This is simple logic. I'd suggest you grow up too.

  • cone

have the author did some research on internet plans outside Malaysia? and have you read the rants and stuff. Im located in one of the develope”D” countries, using a “24 mbps” internet connection, but only to get 4++ mbps top speed –> not during peak hours. peak is around 0.3 – 0.8 mbps.

another thing, since piracy is not that strict in Malaysia, torrenting is among the reason why the bandwith is always overloaded. in countries like US, Japan etc, one get caught if they do this kind of stuff. plus, most ISP in my place for instance, they also capped the total upload and download. you need to pay extra for more GB you used.

  • http://shockerz.wordpress.com/ shockerz

Let me guess, Cone. You are located in Australia. Am I right? With a capital “D” in where you live does have its perks and connection can be another thing after all some ISP like playing dumb to their customers and halt any upgrade works.

Regarding about your 24mbps connection is normal to get around 5MB download speed after dividing it 8. It's true that we can torrent to our heart content while they still did not take any action yet but there are rumors about shutting down the p2p network for good maybe in a few years time.

Our neighbor Thailand and Singapore both provide some good connection at a low price compare to ours. Here's some examples http://www.insing.com/singnet , http://www.starhub.com/broadband/packagebuilder… , http://www.csloxhispeed.com/adsl_pro_en.php

I see. That kinda suck If I were in your shoe but lucky I didn’t. You know, I am intended to test it out once it comes to my neighborhood. I’ll make a note of your warning Mr. UNIFIED and as always welcome to Malaysia where you can practically find half-ass services everywhere.

  • i don’t know anything…

Well, it ain’t that bad actually. But of course, i just subscribed about a week ago. We’ll see how it turns out sooner or later. And its pretty much the same thing in thailand, though they have more consumer choices and that perhaps equate to lower prices..

  • Douche

oh yeah man, the hsbb speeds and prices aren’t enough to satisfy your pirating needs.

  • http://shockerz.wordpress.com/ shockerz

May I ask why do you link this into pirating? I’m only asking is Unifi, a new product from our very own TM company is offering worth it or not for what its providing to the citizen.

  • http://shockerz.wordpress.com/ shockerz

Pathetic! You’re changing the topic in order to flank my route upon this post. Verily, yet another simple minded comment the on issue. From what I can see you are not offering somethings of value in this conversation but your bump up ignorance.

  • bOOOO

u said to give a constructive and viable answer, u also in ur mind right now all what tmnet do is worng..not 1 of ot is right for u…fyi Singapore is extremely small country, easy to manage anuthing, migrate there la if u loved there..pfft!!

  • shark

No matter how fast the speed is, if the usage is limited, then they can keep it. I ain’t interested. And the next person who says that I am negative to this due to my pirating need is going to get a bloody nose. If I am paying for the service, I can use it for whatever I want. You are in no position to judge what I do, capische?

bro, you’re a kid or what? who gives a damn bout Singapore? Korea have higher speed than anywhere in this world. One of the fastest in fact. 75% of people there got high speed Internet (5Mbps or higher), and 98%* is connected to the Internet.

Interesting is although the America invented Internet, it does not have the fastest connection in the world.

  • Ejack_Retr0

In Singapore, a 100Mbps service – which is 5 times the speed of a 20Mbps connection – only costs about RM200. Think about it ,5times the speed of 20mbps,unlimited use.Lets go to Singapore ! :) 100mbps ~!i can download all thing i can!

  • BH JFAM

stop comparing with singapore.. we poor malaysian can’t compete, tak boleh … instead of south .. looks just north to Thailand!! Oh, they don’t publish stuff in English but check out their prices in wikipedia. The only reason they did it better then us – because our country investment goes direct into single pocket without competition. I don’t think will ever see an improvement until this change, lets just dream.

  • Nycdaryl

if the Unifi provide 20MB with price of RM150 then i think it would be worth it. Although Malaysia broadband stated the line 20MB but will it be given that speed of it, I doubt it would not definitely. So why still paying so much but getting not exact speed for users. Not like in overseas, for example in Australia or Singapore do have broadband but they only stated around 1MB but i think their speed will roughly getting download speed of close to 1MB but in Malaysia need to subscribe to 10MB only getting more than 1MB download speed i guess!

  • Mantap

this is what i think. they should upgrade the old product before launching the new one. i wont dreams of 20mbs but only 4mbs or 2mbs. I stay in Bukit Katil Melaka surbubun area near the Mmu but still i cant 2mbs coz it not available here. After long hours waiting and filled the upgrade form at TM Point Pertam after a few days i got sms that said 4mbs is not available at my area. Y didnt they say so when back then? And now theres a new product. I wonder how long i have to wait until i can enjoy using it. i mean when it will available at my area and the price will be reduce. im 45 years old now….

  • http://shockerz.wordpress.com/ shockerz

Now, ain’t that a b*tch. I share the same situation with you too. NO! I still can’t get my 4MB here nor Unifi until the end of this year. Hopefully. Melaka? Another 5 years, I suppose..

  • Vunsadan

With speed cap… only stupid people will subscribe to this kind of deal…for those facebooker… stay with your streamyx… unifi is not worth it… for people who do downloads, be careful, don’t get caught with this ‘trap’ they are setting up… tm is pushing you to go for the more expensive pax.

  • Vunsadan

ya ya… I am not condemning… My idea for tm is not to impose the speed cap.

  • Ibu

How easy it is to condem a service provider when you have no idea the amount of work or money that the company has spent to provide the service. This is an 11 billion ringgit project spread over a timeline of 10 years. The gov gave only 2 billion while TM had to chunk out 9 billion. Was it forced? I would think kind of, all in the name of development for the country. Remember, TM also has thousands of staff who depend on this project being a success. So before you complain about not getting it in Melaka and having volume capping (seriously, do you know that even if you download a movie a day, you won’t even come near 60Gb per month), maybe you should read up about the project scope first. I’m not saying UniFi is perfect but it’s far better than streamyx and I think TM is on the right track in providing better broadband and overall lifestyle solutions for the public.

  • Monzagreat

Thousands of staff did not work hard enough to provide this services cheaper! I believe only few did work hard while others talk a lot. That is the problem. UniFi is in a right direction except for the price. They should provide more options on the package such as options to not include WiFi or TV etc. that might lower the cost. And I don’t believe the 11billion ringgit all goes into this project. If not it may have been cheaper and faster to developed.

  • Monzagreat

Come to Japan, I have just upgraded my Fibre Optic connection to 200mbps recently for a monthly payment of 4500yen(RM166).

  • CW

    I’m in japan…. unlimited use ..1Gb line So-net Hikari (under AU hikari) …5460 yen/month(about RM197) with free-installation fee & 47,500 yen cash-back after 12 month used…. well, easy calculation will be…. around 1500 yen/month…. about RM54/= per month…..

  • http://shockerz.wordpress.com/ shockerz

    That’s music to my ears.

  • DragonHunter

If you think UniFi is a joke, streamyx has recently implemented a download cap on November 2010. There is a 10GB download cap for 1Mpbs and 25GB download cap for 4Mpbs. I’m not so sure about the other packages but I would prefer UniFi. If you are worried about download cap, you should watch anime via streaming rather than downloading it.

  • Buckaroo

Imagine the size of a (city) state like Singapore with a centralized population of 5 million and then compare it with Malaysia, a multiple states nation with decentralized population of 27 million.

After that, imagine the level of ease to implement transportation infrastructures in Singapore, not to mention (in this case) telecommunication infrastructures too. People are mostly living in condos and apartments, centralized according to residential zones.

Then tomorrow, take a look at Malaysia. It’s residential population are mixed, landed properties are a norm. New developments takes place year after year. Distance from one city to another city are so great compared to the southern neighbor. Imagine the cost to lay fiber optic cables from the trunk lines to each and every home of dissatisfied complainants. Imagine that, or at least try to grow a bulb up there.

  • http://shockerz.wordpress.com/ shockerz

Is your statement even valid? I can’t find information to support your claim you made there.Or am I’ve been searching in the wrong places?

  • Buckaroo

bro, you’re a kid or what? who gives a damn bout Korea? Do you the density rate of the population there compared to Malaysia? Do you know that the Korean government forces infrastructure sharing to promote competition? Do you know the cultural difference that enables the Koreans to appreciate more on education using technology? Do you know the various incentives the Korean government gives to its citizen to make them want to use the internet? Do you know Koreans have 2 million internet addiction disorder? Do you know Korean government gives out loan for companies to start up in the broadband business? Do you know Koreans will spent MYR 75 billion for its national broadband project compared to Malaysia which will only spend MYR 11 billion?

So instead of belittling another person’s thoughts, you should know that someone out there could be belittling your own thoughts too.

  • phiau

we pay them to think. if we think for them, then why should they be employed.

  • DragonHunter

Yes they are. Many Malaysians are already facing with this problem. Click here for more details: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1681516

  • http://shockerz.wordpress.com/ shockerz

So, it’s a secret meetup with just a handful of people that are actually discussing FUP mostly on Unifi but streamyx service got throw in as well. Never see that coming.

Oh come on! They should expand their network capacities other than just vandalizing their customers.

  • DragonHunter

Blame stupid TM. They want us to go UniFi but it’s not available in most areas yet. I have ordered UniFi since last year and since then TM never responded. When I called UniFi, they told me I’m on the waiting list and it will be available in my area on October this year. This is stupid. They shouldn’t cap streamyx at the first place. Before the cap is implemented, streamyx was pretty good. But after the cap, things went downhill. My Internet speed was cap to the point I can’t even go Google. Anyway, you all should upgrade to UniFi once it’s available in your area. This is my advice. It’s more cheaper than migrating to other countries.

  • http://shockerz.wordpress.com/ shockerz

I was thinking the same thing too! My area is also schedule for Q4 this year. Funny, I’m not feeling any cap here with my 1MB line or am I not downloading much? Thanks for your overall info mate!

  • Vunsadan

This is what I read at http://www.yongkailoon.com “The cap is spread evenly on a daily basis so if say the monthly cap is 60GB, every day you will have 2GB to download and should your data transfer exceed 2GB, there goes the throttle hammer on you.”

Now tell me if the 60Gb cap is a joke or not… to me once in a while I download a iso linux distribution DVD… which sizes up to 3Gb… If the cap is spread evenly on daily basis… I will end up finishing my download on the preceding day…

  • Unifisucks

As per all work done by Telekom, this is all I can say. “amazing”. No one can suck as bad as you. Writing this because installation has taken more than a month. The first group of people came and said they can’t pull the fibers and then wait. After xx amount of phone calls, we get the next barrier. We came and waited and waited but they never turned up. Let’s not compare price or speed yet. Let’s just talk about getting installation up and ready.

That is not even happening. Reminds me of Malaysian gaddafi ruling over broadband.

  • http://shockerz.wordpress.com/ shockerz

That’s sad to heard the experiences you had with them and my area are still not in service. Am still waiting for it. I like how you compare Gaddafi with broadband in Malaysia I think it bears a certain striking realization of it.

I’m French and I lived in many different countries so I think I have a quite good overview of the Internet providers. First of all, Unifi sucks!!!! It’s damn expensive for what it is and the customer service is probably the worst I have faced in my life!!I had so many issues with Unifi, they changed my modem 4 times and the router 5 times since I applied in June 2011! The guy told me it is because I always left the modem on…after 1 month it was broken…I have the same modem in France since 6 years, always turn on, and it is still working…I hope one day Unifi will understand that the most important is the client service as they are miles away from the standard ones in Europe…and even in some other asian countries!!
