I have been running on Ubuntu for the past weeks and I felt superb! It just run, nothing more nothing less. If I must say Ubuntu is much more better than Windows. Don’t get me wrong as I love Windows 7 too. Both system are great at carrying out their tasks but I see windows more like an OS’s for games rather than for working.

I’m still running strong without any antivirus nor malware protection on my ubuntu. It’s really a relief that I wouldn’t need to worry about viruses and worms entering my system without much of my acknowledgement. Even if it did. Well, let’s just says it won’t even run. It does beg the question “Why it is more secure than windows?”. As a matter of fact, most of the website you surf everyday are using Linux based system (Correct my if I’m wrong). This blog is running on linux too ^-^. So, Yahoo answer gave me one here.

Honestly, as a long time Windows user I have no idea how to even install a simple application on this newly installed system. While what I can only see are .tar files hanging all around only. At first, I can’t find the setup icon within the whole .tar folder. So, I try clicking each of them to no avail. I stopped. Then, re-emerge from my defeated state to raid every linux forum to find the answer.

Surprisingly, there was a lot of other people who are on the same boat as well but what hit me is ubuntu already got a build in software downloader call “Synaptic Package Manager” under “Administration” in the System tab. Almost every softwares and apps is just a click away now. Oh yea! There are no such thing as copyright infringement in the linux world as I heard. Everything are open and free for everyone.

I’m currently am using Chrome on ubuntu to type this entry out. It’s just like love at first sight and am very happy about it. I think I wouldn’t be heading back to Windows any sooner unless for games, of course.

You can download the free distro here at their site and a lots more information here.

P.S. – I’m not dead yet…

What OS are you running?

Been runnin' Linux since '96, and Windows since well before that. Right now, it's Gentoo Linux that I'm living in, but I dabble with various Ubuntu flavors from time to time to see how much like Windows they're turning out. Windows doesn't see much use unless there's Windows-only software like a game I simply MUST play that can't be run on Wine (pretty rare in my case since I don't care for the latest games).

Linux may be rough-around-the-edges here and there, but at least you can polish those edges how you see fit. It's a tool, after all, so the more willing you are to learn how to wield it properly, the more likely you'll fall in love with it as you spend time with it. Windows tends to make it a chore to do things that aren't intended to be done with it, much like Mac OS, though they're also taking some pages from Linux.

I am not a huge fan of Linux myself. I always feel as if I am doing things the long way. I am currently a Windows 7 user, and I have been using Windows all my life. I tried Ubuntu a few times in the past, but it is just not an OS I can stick with. Gaming is not a big issue for me, but applications are. I do not like the having to use open source alternatives to programs I already have gotten used to, and using WINE just does not work for me. Emulator or not, the programs just are not meant to run on Linux.

Now I do not hate linux, but I just feel it is not for me. I am the type person who likes to install new software to try out on my machine on the fly, and Linux just is not for that. I am not a programmer (yet..) so, right now Linux has no pull for me.

I am not sure if you recall the large Windows Security hole that cropped up recently, but this almost scared me into using Linux again, but with the compatibility issues with programs I already like to use…I had to switch back. I will note though. I LOVE linux's GNOME desktop environment. It works so well, and practically ANY wallpaper goes great with it.

You are a hardcore linux user! I need more time on the learning part because a new convert like is hard to know the way around.

A friend of mine once said to me that if you can use the terminal correctly then the world is your oyster. I can see why.

You hit home for this one! Learning to use new software is really a pain in the ass while the old one can’t function correctly on wine but at the end of the day everything still will be completed. Using Ubuntu will be a good exposure for me in different system since my field of studying is Internet Technology and it focus more on programming part.

Yes, the Gnome desktop environment does look enticing and smooth. No, I did not notice the large hole in Windows recently, Mind showing me?
