I’m no guru for Xbox 360 but I have found out a solution to fix the problem. In order for it to stream media off your computer safely to your 360s without letting the machine go online or you accidentally signed in LIVE nor give it permission to call back to its mothership to report you in for the modification you have done to the machine.

If you have a modded 360s to play less legitimate games or even a Jtag machine to run homebrew codes but wishes to use it to stream media rather than purchasing another device to do the job. Let me enlighten you while keeping it short and precise, I assume you have the complete knowledge of what will happen if such a machine that have been changed/altered while letting it roam the internet is, of course, a very grave decision.  I’ll spare you the consequences and directly skip to the good part.

Tried and Tested

I have setup mine perfectly by doing some configuring on my wireless router and my modded Xbox 360 S. Things that you’ll need to understand before you step-in to touch anything. If you have any prior knowledge on networking system do skip this step. For those of you have not, please continue as this will increase your understanding on how a network works.

1. DNS (Domain Name System)

2. Setting up a Static IP

3. DHCP

I must warn you first before taking any steps that I have listed below as I’ll not bear any responsibility to the ultimate destruction of your 360s nor am I responsible for your messed up router configuration. You’ll be the sole individual who is responsible if you broke your machine. It’s not that bad. Just follow below.

Everything is done manually and not automatically which you need to go hands-on.

Within Router

1. Block the Mac addresses of your wireless adapter and your 360s uses from your router. You can get the address from deep within System settings > Network settings > Your Network > Configure Network > Additional Settings > Advance settings. Yeah, Microsoft is hoping that you would mess with their options burrow inside.

2. Use internet access policy that you have on your router or modem in a 24 hour cycles to restrict internet access for your Xbox 360.

If you own a linksys router like me then the process is much more easier because step 1 -4 can set within the Access Restriction Tab.

3. Block the IP you used for your 360s and be careful while choosing this IP address for your machine as it needs to be outside of the DHCP range because we are using a static IP. Refer above.

4. Block the ports that are needed to open LIVE

  • 88(UDP)
  • 3074(UDP and TCP)
  • 53(UDP and TCP)

Within 360s

5. You can also prevent LIVE from accessing the net by using the build-in option within your 360s on the ‘Parental Control’ tab but I won’t bet on it. Since no fans have a thoroughly knowledge what actually happen behind the coding scenes.

6. Adding fake DNS while you’re settings your network configuration in your 360s just to throw your system off the grid because without a proper DNS it can’t even communicate on the internet.

Other settings to remember

  • Gateway is the IP address that access your router/modem. E.g: 192.168.something.something
  • Subnet Mask usually is 255.2553.255.0
  • IP address is the static IP you set for your 360s. E.g: 192.168.something.something

These are the ways that have been tested and worked for me. Remember, nothing is foolproof just be careful and the reason why I employ so many failsafes are because I don’t want the thoughts that my 360s will get ‘brick’ while I’m streaming from the couch.

In a nutshell, manual configuration of your network settings to allow internal network but block external network.

Streaming Media

Just use Tversity! It’s totally free and supports other home devices too for streaming videos, music and pictures off your PC and onto your 360s seamlessly. While you can opt-in for a Pro version but the normal free version is already enough for the average user.

Did I mention why it’s great? If you try to play videos before on your 360s you’ll notice the limitation of video formats it can support. But with Tversity it can automatically convert all those videos you have each with different format into WMV on-the-fly for you. Which also mean you need a pretty beefy desktop computer/laptop in order to support the CPU power needed if you’re streaming HD contents. Better CPU automatically translate into faster processing of your video.

Don’t forget to download the needed codec to transcode or face error prompts on your TV. For instance, Haali Media Splitter, AC3 Filter, Real Alternative and ffmpeg or directshow are needed. Have no fear! Because these are readily available through large codec pack you can download for free.

You are good to go from this point forward.
